Why Your North East Business Isn't Showing Up on Google (And How to Fix It)

BrandonFounder, Footfall Studio4 min read

You're good at what you do. Your customers know it. The problem is, a lot of people who'd become your customers never find you in the first place.

Every day, someone in Consett, Stanley, Durham or Gateshead searches for exactly what you offer. A plumber. A hairdresser. A café for Sunday lunch. Google shows them three or four options, and most of the time, the same handful of businesses show up again and again, whether or not they're actually the best choice locally.

If that's not you, it's not because your business isn't good enough. It's almost always down to a few fixable gaps in how Google sees you. Here's what's usually going on, and what to do about it.

Your Google Business Profile is out of date, or missing entirely

This is the single biggest reason local businesses stay invisible. Google Business Profile (the free listing that shows your business on Maps and in local search results) is often set up once, years ago, and never touched again.

That means:

  • Opening hours are wrong, especially around bank holidays
  • The category the business is listed under doesn't quite match what it does
  • There are no recent photos, so the listing looks abandoned
  • Nobody's replying to reviews, good or bad

Google rewards listings that show signs of life. A profile with recent posts, current hours, and responded-to reviews consistently outranks one that's been left untouched, even if the second business is better.

Fix it this week

Log into your Google Business Profile and check three things. Are your hours right? Is there a photo from the last month? Have you replied to your last three reviews? If any answer is no, that's your starting point.

You're relying on word of mouth alone

Word of mouth is brilliant. It's also invisible to Google. If every new customer comes through a recommendation, your business can be thriving locally while showing almost no digital footprint at all, which means the moment someone searches instead of asks around, you're not there.

This matters more than most owners realise, because search behaviour has changed. People still ask friends for recommendations, but they check Google before they commit. If your listing looks thin compared to a competitor's, that referral can quietly go elsewhere.

Fix it this week

Ask your next five happy customers directly for a Google review, not a Facebook comment or a compliment in person. A specific, worded request works far better than a generic "leave us a review" sign by the till.

There's no consistent content showing Google (and customers) that you're active

Google's local algorithm pays attention to activity. Businesses that post updates, add photos, and get regular new reviews are treated as more relevant than ones that sit static. This is exactly why some newer or smaller businesses outrank older, more established ones. They're simply more visible right now.

For a time-poor owner, "post regularly" can sound like one more job on an already long list. It doesn't need to be complicated. Consistency beats polish here.

Fix it this week

Add one photo and one short Google Business Profile post this week. A finished job, a busy Saturday, a new item on the menu. It takes minutes and it tells Google the business is active.

Why this adds up to lost customers, not just lost rankings

None of these gaps are dramatic on their own. Together, they're the difference between being the business someone finds in ten seconds and the business someone never sees at all. In a region with as much local competition as the North East, that gap is where footfall goes missing.

The good news is that none of it requires a big budget or a rebuild. It requires someone keeping on top of it consistently, which is usually the part that falls off the list when you're running the actual business.
