Does Your Branding Match How Good Your Business Actually Is?

BrandonFounder, Footfall Studio3 min read

You've probably had the same logo since you started out. Maybe a mate designed it, or you knocked it together yourself late one night before the business cards had to go to print. It did the job at the time.

The problem is, that first impression is still doing the talking today, whether it's on your van, your signage, or the flyer someone picks up and puts straight in a drawer. If it doesn't match how good you actually are at the job, it's quietly working against you.

People decide before they've read a word

Someone glancing at a business card, a shopfront, or a Facebook page forms an opinion in seconds, long before they've read what you actually offer. That opinion is built entirely on how things look: is the logo sharp or slightly pixelated, do the colours match across your sign and your socials, does the whole thing feel like one business or three different ones stitched together.

None of that reflects the quality of your work. But it's the first thing a stranger has to go on, and it decides whether they read further or move on to the next search result.

The gaps we see most often

A few things come up again and again with local businesses across the North East:

  • A logo that's fine on a screen but pixelates badly on a printed sign or van wrap
  • Business cards, flyers and social posts that all use slightly different colours or fonts
  • Menus or price lists that were formatted in Word and have never been touched since
  • Signage that still lists an old phone number, an old name, or services you no longer offer

Individually, none of these lose you a customer on the spot. Together, they add up to a business that looks less put-together than it actually is.

You don't need a full rebrand to fix this

This is the bit people usually get wrong. Fixing this doesn't mean starting from scratch with a brand new name and identity. Most of the time it means tidying up what's already there: a cleaner logo file that scales properly, a consistent set of colours and fonts used everywhere, and a set of business cards, flyers or menus that actually match.

It's usually quicker than you think

It's a few focused pieces of design work, not a project. And it's usually far quicker and cheaper than owners expect, which is exactly why it tends to get put off for years.
